As we move into the month of June and prepare to celebrate Juneteenth, it is very appropriate to discuss how racial trauma impacts mental health in the black community. Much of the racial trauma that we experience in our community can be traced back to the experiences of our enslaved ancestors in this country. We still struggle to overcome some of the psychological impact of slavery and continue to be subject to discrimination and oppression that subject us to racial trauma in our daily lives. These racial traumas that are often dismissed as just routine parts of our lives here in America can weigh heavily on our mental health and well being.
